 | IN MY NAME IS A FUNNY TALE | |
My grade six teacher gave me the name RICKIBEL. She connected my nickname Ricki and the first syllable of my family name BELar. My name has its own story. In school, I used the name RICHARD DIAN BELAR. When I applied for my first passport in 1989, the complication began when my school record did not coincide with the name printed in my birth certificate which says RIHCARD DIAN VILAR. Yes, RIHCARD, not RICHARD, the H comes before the C. Luckily, the personnel did not notice the disparity, and luckily too, during that time, I still could use the two family names so the name that appeared in my first passport was RICHARD DIAN VILAR aka (also known as) BELAR. But, five years after, I had to renew my passport and I was really forced to use the wrong family name VILAR since I was told to use that which appears in my Birth Certificate. Of course I wanted to correct it because I want to be the son of my father Edencio Belar Sr. Edencio Vilar Sr. is non-existent. But it was so costly to pay for the court and attorney fees and the ad that I have to place in two newspapers. Now, I am using the two family names. I think its tricky. Cases like these are rampant in the Philippines. Even my sister Edna's family name is not Belar, but Bilar. So, based in our birth certificates, we are not legally sisters. Ha ha ha ha.
